Beautiful Hair How To: Ways to get the bounce back into your hair this spring
Spring is the perfect time to get your hair feeling and looking fabulous. After all, spring stands for renewal, regrowth and revival – all things your hair is probably in need of after the winter months!
Here are some easy ways to get your hair looking healthy, bouncy and beautiful this spring.
Adding Shine to Dull Hair
If your hair is dull, chances are that it will also be dry. However, using the wrong products, using too much of a product and also dirty hair can be causes. Hair that is seldomly washed gets covered with dust and grime, much like your face is after a day. This makes it more difficult for your hair to reflect light and therefore shine! Thankfully, both issues are easily dealt with. In terms of dullness caused by dirt, washing your hair daily with the correct shampoo for your hair texture will give you shinier hair. As for dryness, conditioning your hair is key. This is especially true if you bleach or process your hair. Conditioners flatten your hair’s cuticle, allowing light to bounce off. Use of a pre-shampoo conditioning treatment is also beneficial as this will further repair and smooth your hairs’ cuticle.
It is important to understand that not all hair types are created equal when it comes to shine. The shiniest hair is straight, because straight surfaces reflect more light. The least naturally shiny is frizzy and curly hair, because light is bounced off the hair in different directions. Wavy hair, if the waves are uniform and smooth, can also be quite shiny. To remedy dullness if you have wavy/frizzy hair, using styling products that further smooth the cuticle, such as Philip Kingsley Smooth Cream, Minimizer and Straight Hair, will give you a glossier finish. Using a shampoo and conditioner that are formulated for your hair texture is also vital, as wavy/frizzy hair often needs products that are more moisturising.
Your Scalp and the Spring
Winter can leave you with a slightly flaky scalp. There are products available, such as Philip Kingsley Flaky/Itchy Scalps Toner, which can be used to remedy this. You can also make your own toner at home by mixing equal amounts of mouthwash and witch hazel. This is to be applied after shampooing and left in.
Adding Body to Hair
If you have let your hair grow long over winter, cutting it is the easiest way to reduce weight and add body. If you do not want to cut your hair, volumising products produce great results. Try not to add too much of any smoothing styling product to your hair as this can weigh it down. Other ways to add body include turning your hair upside down when blow drying and using rollers. However, always make sure to be gentle when styling as this can break and damage your hair. Again, washing your hair daily will help add body, as dirty hair is heavier and less bouncy than clean hair!
