Summer Hair

Chlorine and salt water dry out the hair. That combined with the sun’s rays means your hair needs serious protection during the summer months. In part 2 of our summer hair care tips we offer our advice on how to prevent your hair from drying out and changing colour.

Philip Kingsley’s Top Summer Hair Care Tips part 2

Why do we need to protect our hair? Your hair goes to the same places as your skin, so is weathered and damaged similarly. The top layer of your skin is replaced in 28 days. In this time your hair will only grow half an inch. If your hair is an average length of 9 inches, the ends will be one and a half years old and will have lived through at least one summer. The ends, therefore, will be bearing old scars, so to speak, so it is important not to make them worse.

Summer hair problem: Discoloured hair from swimming

Reason: Chlorine and salt water can ravage your hair, drying and discolouring it. Colour treated hair can suffer from swimming due to reaction with copper in the water

Try: Philip Kingsley Swimcap

Why: Originally created for the US synchronised swim team, Philip Kingsley Swimcap water-resistant cream offers protection from water and sun. With a treatment “base” it simultaneously conditions the hair which maintains the hair’s moisture levels, thus protecting against the drying effect of chlorinated and salt water

How to use it:
Apply in sections to damp hair and comb through. Leave on the hair whilst sunbathing and swimming. To remove, rinse then use appropriate Philip Kingsley shampoo, conditioner and scalp toner. As with all sun protection products you must reapply after swimming to maintain maximum protection

What else can I do?
Keep your hair moisturized, nourished and healthy by shampooing and conditioning (ideally daily) with the correct products for your hair type
