Philip Kingsley Clinic Notes: Exam Stress & Hair Loss
In the first of our series of Clinic Notes, we bring you top Trichological information on topical hair health issues from the Philip Kingsley Clinic in Mayfair, London. Today’s post focuses on the issue of exam related stress.
Philip Kingsley, world leading Trichologist and founder of the Philip Kingsley Clinic, comments on Exam Stress:
‘All stress causes an increase of androgens (male hormones), which can adversely affect the hair and scalp, causing flaky/itchy scalps and extra hair fall. Exam stress though, is more intense and over a shorter period so the adverse effects can be temporary.
The clinic sees many young adults suffering from hair problems due to exam stress, but this has always occurred and it is difficult to say whether there is more now than before. It is likely though, that more emphasis has been put on it and young people are more hair conscious now than ever before.
Unfortunately, little can be done to lower stress in taking exams. It would be very difficult for example, to take a nap, do yoga etc., because of the worry about wasting time when they can be revising subjects. The best thing is not to worry about being worried, which can exacerbate the problem.’
